Moving On

So I was perusing Facebook the other day and noticed a girl that I honestly haven't seen in about 5 or 6 years had poked me. I recognized the name, but not the face upon lurking her profile, wondering to myself if she had been involved in a terrible accident that necessitated the reconstruction of her face, or if my memory was simply faulty.

As I added her as a friend, I noticed that she listed herself as being married so I poked around for pictures of her nuptials. Her husband looked really familiar, I knew we went to high school together, but I couldn't quite remember his name (it has been a little over 6 years since I graduated from high school and he was a transfer student in our penultimate year).

He of course doesn't have Facebook but in one of the pictures his brother, presumably the best man, was tagged and he has a rather distinct last name, so bells went off. It was her high school boyfriend, cute I suppose if it weren't part of a growing trend.

A little background info is in order. I graduated from a really tiny high school, as in my graduating class was well below 150 people. I would put it closer to 115-120 max. I also grew up in a pretty secluded neighborhood and there were lots of schools nearby so I attended high school with a lot of the people I'd attended middle and elementary schools with and I would say (this is a conservative estimate as I'm not in touch with every single person) that about a third of them are married or engaged in long-term relationships with other people we graduated with.

Ew! Are you fucking kidding me? You went away to university and you couldn't find anyone else in that 4 to 6 years away from home that you felt the need to reconnect (or never leave, ahem, you know who you are) with your high school boyfriend - lame. If that's honestly the case then I should probably start packing my bags for my big move to Toronto to reclaim my lost love.

In any case I'll definitely be calling my friend D, if only to mock the state of coupledom in our grad class...and possibly to start planning our wedding.

this is why i love facebook.
i have been poking around there a lot too, lately, and looking at wedding photos. but in my case, only a few have gotten married to their high school loves, most have met someone in college, and married them. However I still find the idea a little bit drastic. Marriage fresh out of college, or IN college? You find one person your freshman year of college, and that's that? Seriously lame. ha ha.

This might just be a classic small community syndrome.
My high school grad class was super tiny too. And I live on a small island (130 000 inhabitants). You'd think people would want to branch out and get away but really most of my classmates followed each other to the same countries and cities, they still date each other etc.
My theory is that small town/city/island people sometimes are so used to their little cozy environment that they are afraid(?) to move on to different people.
Since being with those from back home is just easier.

Not me, I agree with you haha. I'm ready to move on.

Ok I've been ranting! So sorry!!!

@pinkstuffedbrain

That's the funny part though, I actually hail from a large urban metropolis so I just don't get it...

So many of my high school "peers" married each other. The thought of being with someone from my high school class sort of makes me want to die.

@stephanie - couldn't have said it better myself!

How sad! I would be horrified, too. I come from a small town and its like they're all inbreeding. They don't even move away from said small town. *shrugs*

Love your blog, btw. So going to bookmark it.

Mmm...I thank Jesus everyday that I'm not married to anyone I dated in high school. Most of college too...

The girl I dated in high school is to this say still the most mature girl I've ever dated.
