"It's my first day"

So yesterday was the first day of my interim managerial duties, and to say that it was a tad rocky was an understatement. My old manager had understaffed us, so we had two less people than we were used to because no one was working a swing shift and by 11 am we were totally screwed for staff. Then one of the three girls who was supposed to be closing just didn't show up for her shift and my persistent calls to her cell phone went unreturned.

I took it to mean that she's quitting becasue she's called in sick for the last of her 3 or 4 shifts. So I made an executive decision and changed the schedule by calling in one of the other girls to work some of her shifts.

I was concerned that a customer that I wouldn't allow to return shoes (we're an exchange or store credit kind of store anyways) was simply going to take her shoes back and whip them at me as she left, so I was pleasantly surprised when she left without incident.

I've also taken to making executive decisions about some accessories we have at work that I'd just like to get rid of, so if you need a belt, and you're not that picky about what it looks like, I can sort of hook you up.

Because it was so busy all day, I could barely go for a break, let alone take an extended one to watch the Cheyenne Kimball performance in the mall.

...and to top it all off, whenever we weren't being bombarded by customers, we were unpacking boxes and boxes of fall WESC, Matix and DVS clothing.

I like it being busy because it means sales are going up and it will seem like I'm doing a good job motivating people when it's simply coincidentaly that my managerial stint coincides with back-to-school shopping season, but it also means that there aren't nearly enough hours in the day to get to everything we need to do.

The ruling class

I found out yesterday that I get to be first in command at work while my boss goes on tour with his band for 2 weeks starting next week, and I'm almost certain that it will result in a staff mutiny. I'm a pretty exacting person, and I forsee tears, and maybe even at least one person quitting as a direct result of my rule.

But, I'm not going to let the power get my head...ok, well maybe just a little bit!

In other news, my planned shopping binge-a-thon, didn't go exactly as planned. I was tagging stuff for the guys store yesterday morning and when I went over to drop off their new stock, I found out that the shoes I'd been fantasising about for ages were on sale for 20% off, so I couldn't pass them up, and ended up getting a pair of the Denim AL50's (sounds gross, but they're pretty cute), a new pair of bright blue Emerica slipons, and a green WESC sweater because it was 50% off and with my discount those deals were just too good to let pass by.

But for now, the chosen one has to head to the bank to pick up a new debit card so this long weekend isn't a dry one, and pay back The Christitute, who's been my personal ATM for the past week or so while I waited for a day off/closing shift that would allow me to actually get to my bank since it's only open from 10 am - 4 pm M - F.

Snarkytown, USA Pop. 2

I forgot to add in my rant yesterday about the fucking idiotic questions I was getting last night. Since I was in a terrible mood, I made a concious effort to be as difficult as possible:

Um, is this a coat check? (three separate people asked me this)

Gingerbread: No, this is actually my personal coat collection. I'm really indecisive, so I like to leave my options open.

Where is the ski trip going? (Literally 14 people who were standing under a sign that said it went to Marmot Basin asked me this. Every table also had a flyer announcing this as well.)

Gingerbread: No it's a free trip to Rabbit Hill (a local, crappy ski hill)

Kat was having a terrible day too, and then she decides to tell me that she's figured me out: I am a coconut! I'm brown on the outside, and white on the inside. I laughed. I also found out that the Jason Collett show is on the same night as a party I'm supposed to go to; but if today is any indication, I'll be in no mood for social interaction.
